Reconstruction

The beginning of reconstruction. On 29 September 2008, the Martynas Mažvydas National Library of Lithuania and the company YIT Kausta AB entered into an agreement for reconstruction of the main building of the Martynas Mažvydas Library.

The course and end of reconstruction. The agreement had to be fulfilled by 30 June 2011, but the onset of economic recession interfered with the financing. Therefore, an additional agreement was signed to extend the project implementation until 30 June 2016. Later on, the agreement was once again extended to 1 September 2016 due to additional façade reconstruction.

Financial report. The reconstruction was financed by the State Investment Programme and co-financed by the European Union Cohesion Fund and the state budget of the Republic of Lithuania. The total value of reconstruction of the main building of the Martynas Mažvydas National Library of Lithuania amounted to EUR 25,910,125.

Architecture and design. Authors of the National Library reconstruction project: Jungtinės Architektų Dirbtuvės UAB; Project Manager: Leonilė Majerienė; Project Part Manager: Arūnas Andrašiūnas. The interior design was created by Jokūbas Jurgelis, Laimis Valančiūnas, and Jurga Marcinauskaitė, architects of the architect studio 2XJ.

Opening of the main building of the Library. The main building of the Library was reopened on 2 September 2016. The visitors of the National Library were invited to creative workshops, jazz concert, and other events.

Renovated Library. After the reconstruction, the Library area has increased considerably. The new phase of Library operation is represented by the slogan 'The reader is changing THE LIBRARY is open not only to the reader'. The National Library is now more open and offers 400 individual workstations and innovative spaces for non-traditional projects, communication, and creation.

Customer service. The activities of the National Library are developed and the spaces are filled little by little, but the Library promises a lot of innovation. Find the Library opening hours here ›
