The Exhibition ‘Lithuanian Heritage Treasures in UNESCO’s Lists and Registers’

On 1 September 2022, there will be an interactive exhibition launched at the Martynas Mažvydas National Library of Lithuania (in the Atrium, 3rd floor) devoted to Lithuanian heritage treasures entered into UNESCO’s lists and registers.

Various lists of UNESCO feature 11 objects from Lithuania, which, by their exceptional and unique qualities, enrich the world’s cultural and heritage treasury. All these objects (the Historical Centre of Vilnius, the Curonian Spit, Kernavė, the Struvė Geodetic Arc, glees, the Baltic Song and Dance Celebrations, cross-crafting, documents recording the Baltic Way, the archives of the Radziwiłł Family, document of the Union of Lublin, and the Žuvintas Biosphere Reserve) are unified by an extraordinary cooperation of people and the coexistence of culture and nature, which held its importantance through he ages.

The exhibition’s stands created by graphic design students at the Vilnius Academy of Arts present the tangible and intangible heritage and introduce all Lithuania’s heritage locations, traditions and documents entered into UNESCO’s lists and registers (the World Heritage List, the World Network of Biosphere Reserves Under the Man and Biosphere Programme, the Representative List of the Intangible Heritage of Humanity, and the Memory of the World Register). The exposition reaches out into the virtual space: visitors are encourage to use the mobile app U CHAT and to ‘communicate’ with playful personages caring for heritage treasures.

UNESCO, by entering heritage objects of various countries into international list, stimulates interest in the cultural variety and heritage as well as the perceiving of its importance in the global context within the consolidation of principles of peace culture, solidarity and equivalence.

This exhibition is part of the series of events ‘UNESCO Week’, which will be launched by the Secretariat of the Lithuanian National Commission for UNESCO on 19–23 September and will present UNESCO’s key activity areas by introducing this organisation’s challenging topics related to education, science, culture, and information and communication.

The exhibition will last until 16 October.

The graphic design of the exposition has been created by Ignas Miškinis, Noatė Atkočiūnas, Austė Dzikaraitė, Deividas Kanapickas, Monika Šumauskaitė and Elena Motiejūnaitė, who were supervised by Prof. Aušra Lisauskienė and the lecturer Vincentas Vienožinskis.
