International conference “Digital approaches in cultural heritage: towards a pan-Baltic cooperation network”

From 21 to 22 May 2019, an international conference – Digital approaches in cultural heritage: towards a pan-Baltic cooperation network – will be held at the National Library of Latvia (Rīga, Latvia, Mūkusalas iela 3). It will explore digital heritage-related topics that are of common interest in the Baltic Sea region – existing and potential networks of collaboration, joint projects for research, digitization, digital repatriation, and the development of digital tools that could foster consistent development of institutions in the region and beyond.

Mrs. Jolanta Budriūnienė, Director of the Documentary Heritage Research Department of Martynas Mažvydas National Library of Lithuania, Head of the International Expert Group “Use of Cultural Heritage Values for Regional Identity” will be present at the international conference. The subject of her report is the use of cultural heritage values for regional identity development.

The conference will address the following issues: What is cultural heritage in the era of digital and societal transformations? What needs to be done to support continued change? What is the value and potential of digital possibilities for heritage? What benefits can regional cooperation bring to this process? How does digital transformation influence change in regional identity?

Following the developments kindled by digital and technological opportunities, the conference will look for new perspectives for sustained and deepened dialogue between cultural and memory institutions, policy makers and researchers. To emphasize this aspect and to contribute to the discussion for setting an agenda for digital documentary cultural-heritage strategies for the period 2020–2027, a discussion with a panel of high-level decision makers from the respective ministries of Baltic Sea region countries will be held on the first day of the conference. Discussion will be continued in topic-based focus groups on the second day.

Acknowledging the year of Latvia’s Presidency of the Council of the Baltic Sea States, the special focus of the conference is pan-Baltic collaboration and the issues related to the accessibility of heritage content across borders.
