Conference 'The Development of Lithuania After 1990: Visions, Facts and Memories'

In 2017, a collection of publications and documents of Vytautas Landsbergis, the President of the Supreme Council–Reconstituent Seimas and the first leader of the restored independent Lithuanian state, donated to the National Library gave way to the establishment of a structural unit of the Library, the Statehood Centre. Its mission is to stimulate the public demand to know the historical development of Lithuania and processes of the creation of a modern state as well as contribute to the consolidation of democratic values and to the building of civic society.

On 25 October, on the occasion of the commemoration of the 90th anniversary of Vytautas Landsbergis, the first leader of the restored independent Lithuanian state the Martynas Mažvydas National Library of Lithuania is holding the international research conference 'The Development of Lithuania After 1990: Visions, Facts and Memories', which will be discussing the time period of the newest history of Lithuania (starting with 1987 to this day) and the role of Vytautas Landsbergis in it.

The conference will gather researchers from various fields from Lithuania and abroad (USA, Latvia, Poland and Ukraine) representing memory, science and research institutions. The honourary member of the Conference will be the Icelandic politician and diplomat Jónas Baldvin Hannibalsson. During his office as the Minister for Foreign Affairs of Iceland, that country was the first to acknowledge the state independence of Lithuania and other Baltic countries in 1991.

The conference is part of the National Library's events devoted to the 90th anniversary of Vytautas Landsbergis.
